Consignment FAQs
What makes working with an independent, online consignor more beneficial than a storefront consignor?
When you choose to work with HandPickedByHan instead of going to your local buy-sell-trade (BST) stores, you can profit significantly more on your preloved clothing, shoes, and accessories. Most consignment stores are competing with thrift store prices, making your return on each sale very minimal. We can price our items based on their competitive resale value instead of a fixed dollar amount that most BST stores work off of. We research every brand and style that comes to us and price each item based on our competitive research. Instead of making $7 on your designer coat, you could make $40+ consigning with us.
What types of clothing items make the most money for your consignment clients?
Right now, we're finding the best profit margins on outerwear, dresses, and tops. We accept all categories and seasons of clothing, shoes, bags, and accessories, from blouses to winter jackets, sneakers to heels, and scarves to hats.
What kind of brands do you typically sell?
Premium, designer and luxury brands (Prada, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Theory, Kate Spade, Burberry, Rag & Bone, Frank & Eileen, etc.), as well as higher-end mall brands (Free People, Anthropologie, Madewell, Patagonia, Eileen Fisher, J. Crew, Lululemon, Athleta, Vineyard Vines, etc.).
Are there items/brands you commonly turn away?
We commonly turn away items if they show signs of wear (i.e. pilling, stains, & holes), or if we know the style or brand will not sell based on our experience/research. Some brands we commonly turn away include: Old Navy, Hollister, American Eagle, Target brands, Francesca’s, Forever 21, etc.
What happens to the items that you choose not to consign?
For items that we decide to pass on, we offer to return the items to the consignee or donate the items on consignee’s behalf. We are happy to provide the thrift store’s tax-deductible donation slip if requested.
Where do you sell the items?
We currently sell items on www.HandPickedByHan.com, Poshmark, EBay, Mercari, Depop, Vinted and in person at The Makers Market. We try to give your items as much exposure as possible by putting them in the eyes of different resale market audiences.
How much time does it take to prepare, post, and sell an item online?
Accepting your clothes to getting them listed online is usually a 4-week turnaround, can vary from season to season. Once the items have been picked up, dropped off, or delivered via mail, we sort through your items. We choose what to sell, input all accepted items into our inventory system, clean and steam, photograph/model the items, edit, research pricing, list, and market each item daily. Then we sell, ship, and repeat. Instead of waiting for something to sell, we proactively work to get your item in front of as many eyes as possible by ensuring they show up at the top of every search engine; thus, securing a quick sale! We find that items typically sell within 1-6 months.
What happens if an item does not sell?
If an item sits for over a year without selling, we may reach out to offer the item back to you or donate on your behalf, depending on your preference. Luxury, designer items take a bit longer to sell on average, so with these items, we're happy to keep them listed for you until they sell.
Who sets the price of the item?
We price each item based on its competitive resale value. HandPickedByHan frequently offers discounts to shop and is solely responsible for all things pricing.
What is the payout structure?
Profit percentages are split 70/30 (HandPickedByHan/Client). Payouts are sent via Venmo at the end of every month.
